ABOUT AMRITHA

Amritha started learning Carnatic music (South Indian classical) from her Mother at the tender age of four. During her teens, SHE taught herself Hindustani and Bollywood vocals – before discovering her love for soul, jazz and the blues IN HER TWENTIES. Amritha’s obsession lies inĀ  fusing her beautiful Indian roots with the power and strength of soul and neo-soul – and creating music that heals and empowers.

BEING BI-CULTURAL

AMRITHA WAS BORN IN CHENNAI, INDIA, AND GREW UP IN AUSTRALIA. SHE STRUGGLED WITH HER SENSE OF IDENTITY AND THE CONCEPT OF ‘HOME’ FOR A LONG TIME. ONE THING WAS ALWAYS OBVIOUS however – HER LOVE FOR INDIA. THESE DAYS, AMRITHA INCORPORATES HER LOVE FOR HER ROOTS IN HER MUSIC AND BEYOND, AND USES HER VOICE TO TALK OPENLY ABOUT ISSUES THAT ARE SO COMMON AMONGST POC AND/OR CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS.

HIPPIE WITH AN MBA

AMRITHA HAS AN MBA FROM COLUMBIA BUSINESS SCHOOL IN NEW YORK, AND HAS WORKED AS A CONSULTANT FOR THE UNITED NATIONS, WORLD BANK AND THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT. WHEREAS SHE ONCE THOUGHT OF HER DUAL-LIFE AS A SOURCE OF CONFUSION – SHE NOW CONSIDERS IT A STRENGTH AND A BLESSING TO BE ABLE TO FULFIL BOTH HER PASSIONS – FOR MUSIC AND SOCIAL CHANGE.
